Pilot Insights | Improving yields and climate preparedness with AI and precision agriculture
In Kenya, Mercy Corps Ventures partnered with Farm Star to pilot a new approach to climate-smart agriculture: delivering AI-powered weather forecasts, pest and disease alerts, and agronomic advice directly to smallholder farmers via mobile messages.
Farm Star, a leading distributor of organic fertilizer with a network of over 100,000 farmers, sought to influence farming decisions and promote regenerative practices. The pilot reached 63 farmers – 70% of whom were women. The results were striking.
80% of farmers reported higher yields
73% improved their farming practices
71% felt better prepared for climate shocks.
The messages proved highly actionable: 97% of farmers consistently applied the advice they received. Farmers cited improvements in planting timing, pest management, and overall planning. One participant shared: “I get to plant and harvest on time since I know when to expect rain or not. It has made planning easier and saved me farm losses due to inconsistent rain.”
The pilot also revealed a clear market gap: 80% of farmers had no good alternative to Farm Star’s service, and 91% of those with options preferred Farm Star over competitors. High engagement and trust signal strong potential to scale.
